Four Ways Exclusion Shows Up:
1. Whakapapa Misalignment Through Severed Connections
AI treats knowledge as extractable data, ignoring the relationships and responsibilities that give it integrity.
When learners can’t trace where knowledge comes from and who holds it, they lose critical understanding of positionality and whose interests are being served.
Try: Ask learners, “Where does this knowledge come from — and who does it serve?”
2. Mana Motuhake Diminished Through Voice Erasure
If AI “fixes” or standardises voices, it can unintentionally erase the autonomy and authority of your distinct voice—the cultural lens, lived experience, and way of knowing that makes your contribution uniquely yours.
Try: Encourage “AI critique mode” before accepting output.
3. Tikanga Disruption Through Hidden Assumptions
AI tools assume Western norms about time, authority, pace, and communication.
Try: Surface assumptions explicitly.
Ask: “What tikanga does this ignore — and how would we redesign it?”
4. Tapu Breaches Through Uninformed Input
Learners may paste karakia, whakapapa, personal cultural reflections, or whānau stories into AI tools without understanding that this knowledge can be stored, analysed, and reused without consent or context. What is tapu (sacred, restricted) becomes data—a serious breach of tikanga.
Try: Teach: “Some knowledge is not for the machine.”
